COMMUNITY UPDATES: JULY TO SEPTEMBER

Here are a few updates on the Neighborhood Council’s community work on mobility, street safety, and upcoming WLA Sawtelle Summer/Fall 2025 community programs.

SAWTELLE MOBILITY STUDY

Thanks to all of our neighbors, friends and stakeholders for reaching out to the Neighborhood Council to let us know of their support for better walkability in our neighborhood.

The Neighborhood Council commissioned a WLA Sawtelle-specific mobility study, the first ever of such work, in 2024 through our Mobility Environment Committee [MEC].

Through community outreach, a walking audit, and online surveys, this project, lead by Joseph Santiago and Gema Martinez-Castillo, was completed in June 2025.

SAWTELLE SLOW STREETS NETWORK

The Sawtelle Slow Streets Network [red line on map] was advocated by the Neighborhood Council and installed as a response to the closure of parks during the pandemic.

The goal is to create an opportunity for people to stay physically active while socially distant by reducing speeding on neighborhood streets. [https://tinyurl.com/mwk6kj58]

This is an existing community infrastructure that has been overlooked in our conversation on the topic of walkability and street safety.

The WLA SAWTELLE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL is organizing a community 5K run/walk in collaboration with Sawtelle Run Club along the Sawtelle Slow Streets Network to highlight this particular feature of our neighborhood infrastructure in Fall/Winter 2025.

SLOW: STREET SAFETY CAMPAIGN

The Neighborhood Council has, in collaboration with students from the Comos Japanese Gakuin, designed a series of large-scale campaigns to remind drivers in our neighborhood to slow down. Spot them in our community once they are installed.

NEIGHBORHOOD PURPOSE GRANT 2024–2025
The Neighborhood Purpose Grant [NPG] is one way for the Council to bring changes to our neighborhood: collaboration and partnership with institutions and community leaders.

Here is a list of our 2024–25 NPG recipients: Sawtelle Japantown Association: Kodomo no hi Children’s Day event; WLA Community Coalition: Oaxacan dance workshop; Gabrielino-Tongva Springs Foundation: Spring gathering at Kuruvungna; LA Nomadic Division [LAND]: Endless Wellspring community workshops in collaboration with Tongva artist Mercedes Dorame.
